Grandmaster HO Chuk Lam

Dr. Antony Kwong Yu POON's maternal grandfather and the father of Ms. HO Mei Sim, Grandmaster HO Chuk Lam was a paramount authority in Lingnan bone-setting and traumatology, a revered educator in Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as one of the founding masters of China's ten major modern schools of bone-setting and traumatology. His martial lineage traced to Master HU Xian and monks of the Shaolin tradition. He practiced and taught medicine in Guangzhou's Xiguan district in his early years. He became renowned across Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau for integrating martial discipline with medical healing, holistic diagnosis and manual bone-setting techniques. Later generations honored him as a grandmaster of Lingnan bone-setting, and he was popularly praised as the "WONG Fei-hung of medical skill."

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Grandmaster HO received recognition from the Party and government and was appointed as a member of the First, Second and Third Guangzhou Municipal Committees of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He took part in the planning and establishment of Guangzhou College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and served as Director of the Surgical Teaching and Research Office of Guangzhou College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Director of Surgery at Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Chairman of the Bone-setting Committee of the Guangzhou Society of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He devoted his career to the education and academic transmission of Chinese Orthopedics and Traumatology. CCTV's public feature "Xiguan Bone-Setting: A Centennial Legacy" also introduces Xiguan bone-setting as a tradition developed through the clinical practice and teaching of noted masters such as WONG Fei-hung and HO Chuk Lam in Xiguan.

Practicing medicine and teaching for more than six decades, Grandmaster HO trained many practitioners, edited and taught works and courses including Chinese Orthopedics and Traumatology and Lectures on Chinese Surgery, and saw his students and later-generation disciples spread across China and overseas. His legacy continues the benevolent medical spirit of Lingnan bone-setting and the family tradition of healing. His sculpture, writings and calligraphy are also preserved in the Xiguan Bone-Setting Culture Exhibition Hall, the first museum in Guangdong Province established by a hospital.
